NM and PS Cretinism is the insufficient thyroid production which results in physical stunting and mental retardation. It is donated as an autosomal recessive trait. Cretinism is located on the x chromosome. Congenital hypothyroidism, or the deficiency of thyroid hormones, can be endemic, genetic, or sporadic. Cretin is a term that is used to describe someone who is affected by this disease. In the 19th and 20th century, the term was used for medical purposes, but recently it has been used as derogatory term for a person who shows stupid behavior.
Symptoms:
constant drooling
a swayback
a potbelly
adult stature without treatment is about 1 to 1.6 meters
poorly formed teeth
swelling around the eyes
dry skin
low energy
memory lapses
thick protruding tongue
choking episodes
constipation
prolonged jaundice
Causes and Risk Factors
thyroid gland dysfunction
family history of thyroid problems
high cholesterol
men over 60 and women over 60 are at higher risk
Diagnosis
After a medical examination, blood tests will be taken. A low T4 and a high TSH means that the child has cretinism. Early Newborn screening can be used to diagnosis the disease.
Prognosis Early diagnosis will result in a good outcome for the infant, in both growth and mental ability. Without treatment, there is little hope for a normal mental state. Without thyroid hormones, the child will most likely grow up with a mental disability. Treatment
If cretinism is caught early on, it can be easily reversed. Infants treated within the first two months of life with usually develop normally. Replacement therapy is a standard procedure. The most common treatment is a thyroid hormone supplementation. These hormones can be extracted from animals or can be synthetic hormones.
Statistics Endemic cretinism is very common in areas of southern Europe around the Alps. Women over 50 and men over 60 may be at risk for thyroid problems. Cretinism occurs at a rate of 1 out of every 6,000 births.
